A Wedding, a Smile, and Some Sour Rice.
Weddings are full of surprises, but this one takes the cake—or maybe the rice!
Hey friend,
When last did you attend a wedding? Last week? Last month? Never? Today, I am sharing a short story that’s equal parts nostalgia and humor. It is about family, smiles, and, well, a guest with a strong opinion about rice!
Okay?
When I was little, my sister stole my toy dog. I cried for hours, angry at her, as she shrugged it off with a giggle. It wasn’t just the toy. It was her carelessness. She left it out in the rain, and when I found it, the screws refused to stay in place, its mechanical bark forever gone.
Today, she’s marching beside me to the altar where a smiling man awaits her. The way he is smiling as I lead her down the aisle, you'd think she was the rising dollar to his Nigerian soul.
She was smiling beside me, eyes bright, almost too bright. Maybe she had forgotten the dog and the years between, or maybe she was pretending not to remember. I couldn’t tell. I smiled back and led her to her seat at the front of the church.
It was a three thousand-seater auditorium, almost filled to the brim. I liked it this way—there was comfort in the crowd. Her doctor husband stood tall beside her as they faced the pastor.
"If you know of any reason why these two should not be married, speak now or—"
He paused, sensing something. The whole church held its breath. I felt a knot tighten in my stomach.
And then we heard it.
"Sorry oo, Pastor."
Everyone turned to the back of the church, where a man stood with a raised hand.
"It’s just... the rice they gave me during the traditional wedding was sour, and I just wanted to make sure it doesn’t happen again, eh! Oya, carry go."
The whole church erupted in laughter, but I could only shake my head. Trust my family.
As I watched my sister exchange vows with her doctor husband, I couldn’t help but think: no matter how far we come, some things never change—whether it’s childhood pranks or unexpected wedding day surprises.
Hey friend, do you have any funny wedding experiences? Share them with me please. I can't wait!
With love and laughter,
Abasiama 💜
P.S. I’ll be back next week with updates, but until then, enjoy this story, share it with friends—and maybe check your rice! 😋
P.S.S. My birthday is on Monday, 28th October!
