Hi Friend,
Some promises were made to last forever.
I had just scored the highest in the whole primary three section. We were class A, B and C and I came first. My mum was happy and bought me a shoe. My first heel shoe.
Around the time, an uncle of mine just returned from the UK. Let us call him Uncle U. It was his first time visiting. He had never seen me prior to that day. My ma made food and bought drinks to keep in the fridge. He came, Uncle U.
While he and ma talked, a neighbor came with a pack of books for me. She said it was my gift for topping the class. Uncle U heard this and when the woman left asked me to tell him one important thing I needed from him as a gift. He would be going back to the UK and returning to Nigeria within a week (he was planning a wedding so…)
The most important thing to little Abas then was my school bag. The one I had was too small for all my storybooks and it had been sewn over a million times (okay not so but you get it)
Uncle U told mum to not buy any bag as he would get me a quality one from the UK. A pink Barbie bag he said.
Actually friend, I am still waiting for the bag. I am still waiting for my pink Barbie bag from this Uncle of mine that avoided me in the three weeks he spent in Nigeria for his wedding and proceeded to avoid me 5 years later when he came back permanently with his family.
That is how you make a promise last forever.
Sometimes, this close to thirty years old woman lies in bed and dreams of her Pink Barbie UK bag and all they could have been and done together.
I will tell my kids about this bag because I used scissors to destroy the old bag ðŸ˜
It is well.
